The HIV seroprevalence rate is estimated at 5%. In 2003, it was estimated that 110 000 people were living with HIV/AIDS in Congo. At least 1500 people are infected each year in Pointe-Noire.
Actually, there's almost no support for people living with HIV/AIDS
After surveys and observations in Pointe-Noire, AZUR Development has noticed that people living with HIV/AIDS weren’t supported in majority. They are often rejected by their families, lose their job and hope to live.
Today, there is hope in the fight against HIV/AIDS thanks to science progress and also ARVs that contribute to increase the life expectancy of a person infected by HIV.
“We need care and support” said project beneficiaries.
After a workshop on palliative care organised on December 2005, AZUR Development plans to continue its action by supporting 100 vulnerable people infected by HIV by providing them a psychological and nutritional support, home visits and care, and access to medicines and ARVs.
We’re already supporting AIDS orphans in the city. There are only two AIDS Treatment centres in the country. The first one was opened in Brazzaville in 1994 and the other of Pointe-Noire in 1999. Thus, people living with HIV/AIDS in other departments are almost abandoned to themselves.
We could extend our action if we receive more donations. To contribute, please write and programmes@azurdev.org.
